Joint research collaboration with the Sun Yat-Sen University on GBA cross-border governance, coordination and management in tourism crisis

Macao Institute for Tourism Studies (IFTM) has signed an MoU with Sun Yat-Sen University (SYSU) and Hong Kong Polytechnic University to form a Greater Bay Area Tourism Research Alliance to study the tourism-related topics in the GBA.

IFTM and SYSU have jointly carried out a research project on “GBA cross-border governance, coordination and management in tourism crisis (粤港澳大灣區旅遊危機治理、協作與管理) since 2020. The project is handled by Dr. Penny Wan, Dr. Xiangping Li and Dr. Virginia Lau with the support from ITRC in IFTM.

The related study was published in journal and book, as well as presented and shared at different academic events. The team has proudly received the 2022 JHTM Highly Commended Paper Award by the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Management (JHTM), a leading journal in the tourism and hospitality field (SSCI impact factor 7.629 in 2022, rated ‘A’ on the ABDC Journal Quality List).

About the award

JHTM offers three annual awards to recognize and motivate high-quality achievement in published research: one Best Paper Award and two Highly Commended Paper Awards. The editorial team of the JHTM selected these papers based on both quantitative analysis (including usage statistics and Scopus citation counts of the published papers) and qualitative assessment of the papers’ contribution to the research field. The study examined how public and private sectors partnered to spur the recovery of the tourism industry from COVID-19. Specifically, it highlights the crucial roles played by the Macao government and the crisis leader in tourism recovery.

The 4th GBA Tourism Research Alliance Forum was successfully held on 5 November 2021

IFTM hosted on Friday (5 November) the 4th Greater Bay Area Tourism Research Alliance Forum. The event, with the main theme as “Effective Governance & Coordination for Post-COVID Greater Bay Area Tourism”, brought together scholars, government officials and professionals from the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and further afield, to discuss the latest tourism research covering the city cluster.

During the event, IFTM and the China Tourism Academy announced the signing of a partnership to boost strategic cooperation and sharing of knowledge. The memorandum of cooperation envisions joint development of tourism research, collaboration in hosting conferences and seminars, and the promotion of personnel exchanges.

The 4th Greater Bay Area Tourism Research Alliance Forum took place at the Conference Room of IFTM’s recently refurbished Educational Hotel Pousada de Mong-Há. The event was held in hybrid format, with some speakers on-site, while others made their presentations via live video streaming. Participants were able to attend the Forum either in person or online.

Keynote speakers at the Forum included the President of the China Tourism Academy Prof. Dai Bin, and Prof. Bob McKercher from the University of Queensland in Australia, who is also Chairman of the Board of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism. MGTO’s Deputy Director Mr. Ricky Hoi Io Meng gave a welcome speech while IFTM’s President Dr. Fanny Vong Chuk Kwan delivered a closing speech.

Several IFTM academics had their latest research featured at the 4th Greater Bay Area Tourism Research Alliance Forum. Scholars Dr. Penny Wan Yim King, Dr. Li Xiangping and Dr. Virginia Lau Meng Chan formed a partnership to produce 2 presentations for the event. One discussed the role of public-private cooperation in Macao’s post-COVID-19 tourism recovery; and the other proposed the development of a tourism-focused satisfaction index for the Greater Bay Area. In addition, IFTM’s Dr. Cindia Lam Ching Chi and Prof. Zhao Ying from Sun Yat-sen University in Guangdong Province presented their research project “Tourists’ decision making in movement behaviours within the Greater Bay Area – A time budget perspective”.

The 4th Greater Bay Area Tourism Research Alliance Forum was organised by IFTM, and supported by the School of Tourism Management at Sun Yat-sen University and the School of Hotel and Tourism Management at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The 3 higher education institutions established in November 2018 the Greater Bay Area Tourism Research Alliance with an aim to conduct joint research and contribute to the development of tourism in the region, providing support to local policymaking efforts.

The 3rd International Tourism Retail and Service Management Conference (TRMC2021) builds on previous conferences hosted by the Macao Institute for Tourism Studies in 2018 and Nankai University (China) in 2019. This is a two-day all-virtual conference held between October 12-13, 2021 (Malaysia Time Zone). The conference will be hosted by the School of Hospitality and Service Management at Sunway University in partnership with the Macao Institute for Tourism Studies, University of South Carolina (USA) and Nankai University (China). The main theme of this conference is “Developing Sustainable Tourism Retailing”.

The theme of sustainability is highly relevant given the significant changes to the retail industry brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. As tourism destinations have had to close-up all around the world, the retail landscape has been significantly impacted. Looking to the future, how will tourism destinations sustainably reopen their attractions, facilities and retailing to tourists? As shopping is being shifted online, there is also a need to question how the retail offering will have to innovate to entice customers back? What will the future retail environment look like? How will the retail experience have to change? This begs questions of not only identifying market and financial sustainability, but also the question of long-term environmental sustainability.
